Description
Introduction: In contemporary medical curricula, anatomy education frequently encounters fragmentation due to the reliance on disparate resources, including gross anatomy platforms, histology and pathology websites, radiological imaging repositories, and separate assessment tools. This cognitive switching can disrupt the learning flow and hinder the integration of micro- and macroscopic concepts. At Roseman University of Health Sciences (RUCOM), we aimed to centralize the student learning experience by utilizing the Sectra Educational Portal (SEP) not merely as a visualization tool but as a primary hub for asynchronous learning. This presentation outlines our workflow for embedding interactive H5P exercises and external histology repositories directly into the SEP environment to create a cohesive, multi-modal learning experience.
Description: Our strategy involved three key innovations within the SEP environment. First, we utilized H5P (HTML5 interactive content creation program) to create rich, interactive exercises - such as drag-and-drop labeling, flashcards, and interactive books - which were then embedded directly into Sectra lessons. Second, we bridged the gap between gross anatomy and microanatomy by embedding links to external, high-fidelity histology and pathology image resources such as Histology Guide and WebPathology, and framing the content within the lesson context alongside relevant gross anatomy teaching. Finally, we reinforced these concepts by implementing immediate formative assessment using SEP's native assessment features to create Multiple Choice and open-answer questions, encouraging active recall at the moment of learning.
Discussion: By consolidating these resources, we transformed the anatomy lab experience from a passive review of images into active, inquiry-based sessions. The use of H5P specifically enables gamified learning elements that SEP does not inherently provide, while the integration of external histology links ensures that students have access to the highest-quality histology and pathology references without managing multiple logins or tabs.
Conclusion: The integration of H5P and external web resources into the Sectra Educational Portal offers a scalable approach to boost student engagement and enhance curriculum consistency. It provides flexibility in content creation and moderation, especially for the new Medical Degree (MD) program at RUCOM. Our goal is to show that, through innovative use, SEP can become a comprehensive Learning Management System for anatomical education within an MD program. In our experience, this integrative approach, using various resources, has received very positive feedback from our students, keeping them motivated and providing numerous opportunities for content review.
